Originating from the Tadcaster area, the Cundall family took over the firm of Speck and Duggleby, Agricultural Valuers
and Salesmen in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The name changed to Joseph Cundall & Sons, until the 1960's when it
was altered to Cundalls. Having operated from a room in Sherburn Lodge; the firm expanded by taking over
Tom Kitching's Fruit Shop which backed onto their Market Office at Malton. This provided them with a prominent
Market Place location, where they still operate today. As the residential agency side of the business expanded,
the Kirkbymoorside-based firm of Kendrew & Dennis was acquired, and offices opened in Pickering and various other
locations. In the early 1970's they joined with B. L. Wells & Son of Hull who specialised in commercial work, the
name changed to Wells Cundall and offices opened in all the large towns in the area.
In 1987 the business was bought by the Nationwide Building Society, and in 1992 the present partners under the
Chairmanship of John Cundall succeeded in re-purchasing the business, the name reverting to Cundalls. Since then
the firm has gone from strength to strength, with offices in Malton, Pickering and York; re-enforcing its reputation
as one of the premier agents in the area.
